Sweater Weather

Sweater Weather

Daytime temps may still be mild, but the changing leaves, damp days and chilly nights are all pointing towards Autumn.  This means sweater weather is upon us, and it's going to stick around for a while.  Rather than dread the colder months - as so many of us do - embrace them and the cozy sweaters they require.

There are a few essential sweaters needed to get you through Fall, Winter and early Spring.  The one you will probably get the most use out of is a lightweight, cashmere turtleneck.  Invest wisely here - a good cashmere piece can last you years - choose a timeless, flattering silhouette that you won't tire of.

An oversized cardigan will be your second go-to, it's a super versatile piece that you'll grab again and again.  Wear it over a dress and tights with your favorite felt fedora for a spunky day-time look, throw it on with your workout gear post Pilates, and of course belt it with jeans and a chambray shirt and suede booties for an easy weekend look.

A causal, graphic pull-over is another workhorse, especially on the weekend. It's a fresh alternative to a sweatshirt and you'll feel more polished wearing it.

Just for fun, pick a novelty piece.  It'll be hard to choose between the two, but we suggest either a sleeveless tunic that can be layered over tees, dresses and under a blazer or a poncho that you can wear with EVERYTHING.

Mod for Fall

Mod for Fall

It's so exciting to see how different designers revive and reinterpret trends, especially when things gets a little retro.  The 60's are making a bit of a comeback this season and many of our favorite designers have put their spin on all things Mod.

It's easy to take this trend too far and land it costume territory, so it's important keep your accessories sleek and your silhouettes clean.  Although we all don't have legs for days and the perfect fringe like our dream girl Alexa Chung, she is a good source of inspiration when it comes to keeping the Mod trend modern.

Daytime Sparkle

Daytime Sparkle

Fashion used to have rules that were strict and finite.  We've heard them all before: no white after Labor Day, don't mix black and navy, always match your purse to your shoes, and sequins and sparkle are soley for after 5 PM.  Well, we're here to tell you that none of the old rules apply anymore.

We love to add a little sparkle to any outfit, whether that means carrying a glittery clutch instead of a leather handbag or layering a sequined sweater over an otherwise casual, daytime look.

From Left to Right: Vince Color Block Knit Fur Vest, Hartford Moha Cardigan, Rag & Bone Dakota Hat, James Perse Button Up Shirt, Hartford Jom Skirt, Grisal Melange Scarf and Rag & Bone Grayson Backpack.

Sparkle can be both sophisticated, edgy and effortless.  Luxe layers in daytime fabrications will instantly add a casual edge to your ensemble and flats are a must.  We would add some classic penny loafers to this look and even some textured tights once the weather turns cool.

Wardrobe Essentials - L B D

Wardrobe Essentials - L B D

If you're anything like us, you probably have more than one little black dress hanging in your wardrobe.  Just in case, we've pulled some of our favorite LBD's of the season and a couple tips on how to choose the best dress for you.

Most importantly, FIT is key.  Find a silhouette that suits your body and if necessary have your tailor work her magic to make it fit perfectly.  You want to be able to wear this dress over and over again, and the better it fits, the more likely you are to grab it from your closet.

Your dress should be VERSATILE.  Whether that means you can take it from day to evening or wear it all year long, a dress that can be worn in multiple ways on multiple occasions will get more use and more love.  That being said, it's also important to invest in classic, black cocktail dress for evening that makes you feel fab.

We can thank Coco Chanel for pioneering the modern LBD, our closets would not be the same without it.

Sporty Chic

Sporty Chic

It's not solely because we're in portland - the home of modern athletic wear and originator of the athleisure trend - that we're excited about the sporty-chic look that's happening for Fall.  The style is, in fact, totally versatile.  It's easily dressed up or down, depending on the silhouette and fabrication of the pieces you choose.

Sporty does not have to equal casual, a silk skirt or trouser from T by Alexander Wang paired with a cashmere sweater and sky high suede pump will take you straight from day to evening (see below), while cropped sweats from ATM plus a luxe, cotton tee with athletic accents paired with a leather jacket are perfect for saturday errands and lunch with friends.

Vince Cashmere Cowl Neck Pull-Over, T by Alexander Wang Satin Skirt, Rag & Bone Floppy Brim Fedora, Rene Escobar Chain Link Bracelet, CLP Metallic Snakeskin Cuff and Vince Signature V Modern Bucket Bag.

The trend, in it's many forms, has been featured by many of our favorite designers, including Akris Punto, Max Mara, Rag & Bone and Vince.  You don't need to take it too far, it can be as subtle as a contrast racing stripe down the leg of your crepe joggers, a mesh knit, cashmere sweater or simple the addition of sneakers to your ensemble.
