2017 Wardrobe Detox

2017 Wardrobe Detox

We made it to January. Phew! 2016 has certainly been a whirlwind, which makes the fresh start of a new year even more inviting.

As we do every year, January is time for our annual closet overhaul.  We're far enough into the winter season to know what we'll be wearing till the weather warms up, and have enough distance from Spring and Summer to know what we don't want or need anymore.

There are easy rules to follow when deciding what to toss and what to keep that will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed or making any decisions you might regret (we're thinking of those special pieces we impulsively sold).

Quite simply, if you love it, don't toss it. Even if you haven't worn an item in years, place it in storage for safe keeping and move onto the next piece.  As for what to toss?  If you don't love it plus it doesn't fit or you haven't worn it in over a year or it's damaged beyond repair or outdated then you can do one of three things.  Repair/alter, sell or donate.

From L to R: Vince cotton sweater, Rag & Bone "Dre" jean, ATM stripe tee, Mother "Looker Crop" jean & Veronica Beard "Schoolboy" jacket.

We like to fill in a few key pieces after our detox, wardrobe essentials that we will wear and love: denim, a stripe tee, a year-round sweater and a timeless blazer.

Spring Denim Essentials

Spring Denim Essentials

We've touched briefly on a few denim silhouettes for spring, we're talking about you crop flare, but we wanted to dive deeper into this season's trends.  We have the usual suspects for warmer weather - boyfriend jeans, shorts, major distressing and white denim everything - but there are a few more interesting and unexpected styles out there that we are super excited about.

You'll find released hems on just about every denim style you can think of, from jeans and shirts to dresses, it's a quick way to add some extra texture to your outfit and also a little edge.

The LDD (little denim dress) is another one we love.  It can be as simple as a chambray shirt dress all the way to a breezy yet tailored wrap dress or even a bold maxi dress.  These dresses will give you lot of mileage during the spring and summer months, moving easily from day to evening by simply changing your accessories.

A classic piece that's made a comeback, is the high waist mini skirt. We saw it in suede for winter and it's returned in denim with a raw hem for spring and summer.  Pair this piece with a fitted white tee and your favorite gladiator sandals for a classic summer ensemble.

From L to R: Closed "Starlet" jean, Current/Elliott trucker jacket with rolled sleeves, Closed wrap dress and released hem top & Current/Elliott "Naval" skirt.

The best part about jeans and denim, is the countless ways you can wear each piece.  Even with raw edges, distressing and holes, you can dress your pieces up for a fun night out or down for a weekend spent with your family.

How to wear the Crop Flare

How to wear the Crop Flare

You're probably seeing these jeans everywhere - they're a little funky, a little short and sorta flared - and wondering how and the heck you're supposed to wear them.  Well, you shouldn't be scared by what you don't know...all it takes is a little education.  We are officially obsessed with this denim trend that's happening (we have at least four different styles in the store right now) and can't wait for you to love them too.

Current/Elliott rolled sleeve trucker jacket, Max Mara stripe sweater, AG Jeans "Jodi" crop flare, Loren Stewart necklace and bracelets, Shiraleah leather tote bag.

1.  They should be cropped, but not too cropped.  If you happen to be tall they may hit you a little higher right above the ankle, but that's okay.  You really want the hem of the jeans to barely hit the top of your favorite ankle booties.

2.  The flares range from baby-bells to just the slightest kick.  Choose a silhouette you're comfortable with, whether it's a super flare or or not, and you'll be much more likely to sport these all year long.

3. Until you've grown comfortable with the trend, let the jeans do the talking and keep your other silhouettes simple and classic.  A pair of cropped flares pair perfectly with a striped tee, work wear jacket, suede booties and a messy bun for day or a crisp white shirt, a pair of sky high pumps and a bold lip for evening.

We can't wait to see how you interpret this new denim look, we know it'll be totally fab.

2016 Wardrobe Detox

2016 Wardrobe Detox

A new year often means a fresh start - and maybe even a fresh wardrobe - so we wanted to help you clean out your closet a bit and update some essentials.

Unless you are a stickler to the One In, One Out rule, your closet may feel cluttered and overwhelming come January.  Although we suggest sorting through your clothes seasonally, January is a great time to do an overhaul, especially since consignment stores and clothing resale shops are still buying for winter through mid-February.

There are a couple of guidelines to remember when doing a closet clean out.  If you haven't worn a piece in over a year, it's too big or too small, has irreparable damage, or it holds no emotional value (which would warrant storage) then it should be thrown into one of three piles: Sell, Donate, Alter.

ATM voile boyfriend shirt, Rag & Bone jeans, Vince cashmere poncho, Current/Elliott "The Cropped Straight" jean and "The Patch Pocket Workman" shirt.

We picked a few of our favorite new arrivals for Spring, to fill in a bit of what will get taken out. You can never go wrong with a pair of skinny jeans, a light-weight white shirt, a cashmere poncho and a chambray shirt. All essential, season-less and timeless pieces.

Wardrobe Essentials - Denim

Wardrobe Essentials - Denim

If you're anything like us, you've probably acquired quite the denim collection over the years. With each new season comes a new trend and a couple additions to your closet.  Whether you're doing a wardrobe overhaul or just need a little refresher, we've pulled together the five essential pieces that will give you an efficient and effective denim wardrobe.

Rag & Bone Skinny Jean, AG Jeans Harper Straight Leg Jeans,
Frame Le Garçon, Frame Le High Flare
and Current/Elliott "The Snap" Jacket

The Skinny:

Although the trends may imply otherwise, the skinny jean is your number one denim essential. Wear it ankle length for a sophisticated and classic look that references the chic style of the 6o's. Although you can certainly sport the skinny in every color of the rainbow, a dark, denim rinse, with minimal distressing is clean and can easily be dressed up or down.

The Cigarette:

A straight leg jean never goes out of style - just look at your dad's 501s.

The Boyfriend:

There's nothing better than a pair of jeans that are so comfortable that you forget that you're in denim.  This cut isn't just for the weekend, a slim boyfriend style in a medium wash will be easy to wear with sneakers and a sweater but will also pair well with a crisp white shirt, stilettos and a statement necklace.

The Flare:

A high-waist flare may be a bit out of your comfort zone, but believe us when we say it's a super flattering silhouette.  They accentuate your waist and bum all the while making your legs look a million miles long.

The Jacket:

A denim jacket is one of those pieces you'll pull out again and again.  It's a season-less staple that will take you from fall through the heat of summer. You can go oversized for this one, but we think a classic, slightly shrunken silhouette will give you the most longevity.
