Modern Cocktail Attire

Modern Cocktail Attire

With the arrival of June comes a whole new season of events - weddings, graduation parties, bridal showers - and with those events comes the need for a versatile, chic new dress.

We love that rules for event dressing are looser, and you can get creative with not only your dress but your accessories as well.  Instead of a bold necklace, try throwing on a fringe, skinny scarf for a totally modern and updated take on the lariat.  And rather than stick to the basic black handbag, add color, texture and sparkle with a Lucite clutch filled with flowers.

From L to R: Ashlyn'd clutch, Versace Collection dress, Sarah Weinstock french lace starburst pendant, Halston notch neck dress, Shiraleah leopard print clutch, Chan Luu skinny scarf with fringe, ALC "Louise" dress and Claudio Cutuli laser cut leather handbag

Each of these dresses can easily take you from a daytime luncheon to an evening wedding, all you need is a change of footwear and a touch more lipstick.

Safari Chic

Safari Chic

The most iconic trends can often be traced back to the visionary, Yves Saint Laurent.  From "Le Smoking" the first tuxedo for women, to the gypsy collection that inspired the boho trend of today all the way to safari chic.  His ability to think outside the box, and turn social norms on their head, lead fashion to where it is today.

In his honor, we've chosen a couple of our favorite safari inspired looks of the season.  We saw the trend all over the runways and now it's time to incorporate it into your wardrobe.  It can be preppy, glam as well as edgy, so whatever your style preference, it's an easy one to mix in.

From L to R: Max Mara laser cut leather tote bag, Love Heals wrap bracelet, Sara Weinstock 18K gold "Alexandria" earrings with diamonds and sapphires, Fabiana Filippi linen and suede vest, Closed "Starlet" jean, Vince striped cotton shirt, Rag & Bone floral print scarf, Sara Weinstock 18K gold and Oxidized sterling silver bangles, Shiraleah calf hair clutch, Closed suede pop-over & Current/Elliott "The Cuffed Skinny" jean

Summer Stripes

Summer Stripes

Stripes are a pattern that scream summer. From basic tees, to Breton sweaters all the way to breezy linen shirts, tailored skirts and slouchy jackets.  No longer limited to classic blue and white, striped tees and sweaters are coming in all different colors and silhouettes. We love the subtle update of gray or black for a more sophisticated look that still channels your inner Bardot.

From L to R: California Tailor "Tomboy" t-shirt, Rag & Bone "Stark" 10" crop jean, Loren Stewart necklace and bracelets, Shiraleah calf-hair leopard print tote, ATM "Sailor" sweater, Frame "Le Garçon Crop" jean, Samira 13 Tahitian pearl drop earrings, Merci Marie chain trim cross-body

We can't really think of a time or place where the correct stripe wont work.  Keep it casual on the weekend with a tee, distressed denim and patterned tote, and knock him dead on a chilly date night with an oversized sweater, slouchy, white boyfriend jeans and your highest heels.  Obviously a bold, bright lip will accent both looks perfectly.

Treat Yo' Self

Treat Yo' Self

We're getting in the spirit of Saint Valentine's Day here at Mercantile.  Shades of pink and red on the racks and all the candy hearts you could ask for.

We know it can be a loaded holiday for a lot of people - whether you're in a committed relationship, years long marriage or happily single - it can be both stressful and often times disappointing.  Rather than put your Valentine's gift in the hands of another person, we've picked out some rose hued items just for you.  That way, no matter what your relationship status, you'll be taken care of.  We believe in self-reliance after all.

Take your pick from the list below, grab yourself a bottle of bubs and you'll be all set for a relaxing, and of course stylish Saturday (fingers crossed for sunshine!).

From L to R: Paul Smith herringbone stripe scarf, ATM "Cozy" cashmere cardigan, Max Mara "Oblato" jacket, Shiraleah leopard clutch, Kismet by Milka double bar bangle with champagne diamonds, Max Mara "Palco" shirt, Majestic striped linen t-shirt.

Always remember, there's nothing better than to treat yourself!

How to wear the Crop Flare

How to wear the Crop Flare

You're probably seeing these jeans everywhere - they're a little funky, a little short and sorta flared - and wondering how and the heck you're supposed to wear them.  Well, you shouldn't be scared by what you don't know...all it takes is a little education.  We are officially obsessed with this denim trend that's happening (we have at least four different styles in the store right now) and can't wait for you to love them too.

Current/Elliott rolled sleeve trucker jacket, Max Mara stripe sweater, AG Jeans "Jodi" crop flare, Loren Stewart necklace and bracelets, Shiraleah leather tote bag.

1.  They should be cropped, but not too cropped.  If you happen to be tall they may hit you a little higher right above the ankle, but that's okay.  You really want the hem of the jeans to barely hit the top of your favorite ankle booties.

2.  The flares range from baby-bells to just the slightest kick.  Choose a silhouette you're comfortable with, whether it's a super flare or or not, and you'll be much more likely to sport these all year long.

3. Until you've grown comfortable with the trend, let the jeans do the talking and keep your other silhouettes simple and classic.  A pair of cropped flares pair perfectly with a striped tee, work wear jacket, suede booties and a messy bun for day or a crisp white shirt, a pair of sky high pumps and a bold lip for evening.

We can't wait to see how you interpret this new denim look, we know it'll be totally fab.
