2017 Wardrobe Detox

2017 Wardrobe Detox

We made it to January. Phew! 2016 has certainly been a whirlwind, which makes the fresh start of a new year even more inviting.

As we do every year, January is time for our annual closet overhaul.  We're far enough into the winter season to know what we'll be wearing till the weather warms up, and have enough distance from Spring and Summer to know what we don't want or need anymore.

There are easy rules to follow when deciding what to toss and what to keep that will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed or making any decisions you might regret (we're thinking of those special pieces we impulsively sold).

Quite simply, if you love it, don't toss it. Even if you haven't worn an item in years, place it in storage for safe keeping and move onto the next piece.  As for what to toss?  If you don't love it plus it doesn't fit or you haven't worn it in over a year or it's damaged beyond repair or outdated then you can do one of three things.  Repair/alter, sell or donate.

From L to R: Vince cotton sweater, Rag & Bone "Dre" jean, ATM stripe tee, Mother "Looker Crop" jean & Veronica Beard "Schoolboy" jacket.

We like to fill in a few key pieces after our detox, wardrobe essentials that we will wear and love: denim, a stripe tee, a year-round sweater and a timeless blazer.

Modern Classics

Modern Classics

Fashion may feel fast - it is always changing - but certain styles, silhouettes and fabrications are constant.  A menswear-inspired wool coat, a white cotton shirt and denim show up every season. To keep a classic outfit feeling fresh and modern, choose unexpected colors and textures and play with silhouette and proportion.  We've pulled together a few of the best modern classics from the current season to give you a versatile, day-to-evening, holiday look.

Rag & Bone "Blankett" coat, ATM "Boyfriend" shirt, J Brand "Selena" crop bootcut jeans, Samira 13 pearl earrings, Rag & Bone color block scarf, Vince "Signature V" leather tote.

Wardrobe Essentials - Denim

Wardrobe Essentials - Denim

If you're anything like us, you've probably acquired quite the denim collection over the years. With each new season comes a new trend and a couple additions to your closet.  Whether you're doing a wardrobe overhaul or just need a little refresher, we've pulled together the five essential pieces that will give you an efficient and effective denim wardrobe.

Rag & Bone Skinny Jean, AG Jeans Harper Straight Leg Jeans,
Frame Le Garçon, Frame Le High Flare
and Current/Elliott "The Snap" Jacket

The Skinny:

Although the trends may imply otherwise, the skinny jean is your number one denim essential. Wear it ankle length for a sophisticated and classic look that references the chic style of the 6o's. Although you can certainly sport the skinny in every color of the rainbow, a dark, denim rinse, with minimal distressing is clean and can easily be dressed up or down.

The Cigarette:

A straight leg jean never goes out of style - just look at your dad's 501s.

The Boyfriend:

There's nothing better than a pair of jeans that are so comfortable that you forget that you're in denim.  This cut isn't just for the weekend, a slim boyfriend style in a medium wash will be easy to wear with sneakers and a sweater but will also pair well with a crisp white shirt, stilettos and a statement necklace.

The Flare:

A high-waist flare may be a bit out of your comfort zone, but believe us when we say it's a super flattering silhouette.  They accentuate your waist and bum all the while making your legs look a million miles long.

The Jacket:

A denim jacket is one of those pieces you'll pull out again and again.  It's a season-less staple that will take you from fall through the heat of summer. You can go oversized for this one, but we think a classic, slightly shrunken silhouette will give you the most longevity.

Wardrobe Essentials - L B D

Wardrobe Essentials - L B D

If you're anything like us, you probably have more than one little black dress hanging in your wardrobe.  Just in case, we've pulled some of our favorite LBD's of the season and a couple tips on how to choose the best dress for you.

Most importantly, FIT is key.  Find a silhouette that suits your body and if necessary have your tailor work her magic to make it fit perfectly.  You want to be able to wear this dress over and over again, and the better it fits, the more likely you are to grab it from your closet.

Your dress should be VERSATILE.  Whether that means you can take it from day to evening or wear it all year long, a dress that can be worn in multiple ways on multiple occasions will get more use and more love.  That being said, it's also important to invest in classic, black cocktail dress for evening that makes you feel fab.

We can thank Coco Chanel for pioneering the modern LBD, our closets would not be the same without it.

Wardrobe Essentials - White Shirt

Wardrobe Essentials - White Shirt

There are some items you should always have in your closet: an LBD, great fitting jeans, black, white and gray t-shirts, a cashmere sweater, etc...

One of the most important, and versatile pieces you should have is the classic white shirt. There are so many iterations of this staple, but we're sticking to the original.  Whether you choose crisp poplin, breezy cotton lawn or lightweight silk, it's a piece you will reach for again and again.

Equipment Signature Shirt, Rag & Bone Beau Shirt and Strenesse Stretch Shirt

There are endless ways to style your white shirt. It can be as simple as casually rolling your sleeves up to your elbows and knotting your shirttails.  Layer it under sweaters, tuck it into your favorite jeans or pair it with your favorite statement necklace.  Most of all remember it's not too precious, the contrast between denim and a crisp white shirt is totally timeless and chic.
