Snow Day

Snow Day

What a winter! Here in the PNW we've experienced record snow fall and storm after storm, making for some serious winter weather.  As much as we'd like to be thinking ahead to spring, it's a hard thing to focus on when it's so so chilly out!  Lucky for us we've got a spot of sunshine when it comes to our outerwear options - specifically in Mercantile favorite Herno - these down jackets are available in nearly every color of the rainbow with a silhouette to fit every figure.

The Italian based company boasts an ecologically sustainable factory - always a plus in our book - as well as ethically sourced down, all finished with the highest Italian craftsmanship making the chicest and most lightweight puffer we've ever seen.

From L to R: Derek Lam 10 Crosby woven cross-body, Rag & Bone "Salute" stripe top, Current/Elliott jeans, Herno puffer jacket, Frame jeans, Amina Rubinacci tweed jacket, Derek Lam 10 Crosby leather cross-body with metal hardware and Antonelli Firenze "Charlotte" shirt.

These jackets are not just for the weekend, although we love to pair them with denim and a cashmere sweater.  The pieces can easily be elevated to evening, they are Italian after all, with a cigarette pant and crisp white shirt.  Although you'll be happy with one, we find it hard to resist a new Herno puffer, especially when the colors are so delicious!

Shear Genius

Shear Genius

With Christmas just days away, we've got sleigh bells and snow flakes on the brain.  Unfortunately, here in Portland, the reality is more like duck boots and rain drops.  Rather than get too bummed about the drizzle, we've focused our attention on a major trend for winter that our buyers spotted it all over NYC. Shearling.  It's the basically the warmest fabrication out there, and totally timeless; you'll stay cozy and chic winter after winter.

Although rain isn't ideal for fur and shearling, you'll get more wear out of your piece if you treat it like you would any other winter coat. Just don't forget your umbrella.  And don't worry, we've included a vegan option for those of you who don't do fur.

L to R: Vincent Pradier beanie, Rene Escobar necklace, Sara Weinstock bangles, Christiansen fringe leather hobo, Rag & Bone "Callista" crewneck sweater, Current/Elliott plaid shirt, AG "Nikki" jean, Vince shearling jacket with hood and Theory "Visterna" faux shearling vest.

When the temps start to warm a bit with the arrival of spring, don't be afraid to pair your shearling outerwear with a mini dress and a bare leg for a bold, high fashion look.

Texture Takeover

Texture Takeover

As the weather gets chillier, it's easy to lose inspiration and stick to a winter uniform. Jeans + sweater + boots + coat = snoresville.  It's tough to get excited about what you wear when it's freezing and wet outside.  We have an idea to get you motivated to spice up your cold weather wardrobe.

Theory "Visterna" faux shearling vest, Rag & Bone "Faye" shirt, Theory "Nellida" rib skirt, Vince zip back sweatshirt, Rag & Bone wide brim fedora, Hartford scarf and Vince "Zip Line" bags.

Winter dressing is all about texture and how you mix it. From chunky sweaters, to bouclé wool jackets and heavy winter coats to delicate scarves and knit hats to distressed denim and graphic prints...the list is endless.  Rather than choose one bold texture as an accent piece (usually a chunky sweater of some sort), we recommend mixing multiple textures - faux fur, leather, rib knit, heather jersey, etc. - into one outfit. Go wild!
